Watson surprise omission
PA Auckland The medium-fast bowler, Willy Watson, is a surprise omission from the Auckland cricket team for the Shell Cup series.
In spite of his stirring bowling for Grafton on Saturday, and for Auckland against Northland on Sunday and Monday, Watson could not find a way into the Auckland team ahead of Martin Snedden, Gary Troup, Danny Morrison or Stuart Gillespie. Martin Pringle, the young Ellerslie batsman used against Wellington and New South Wales in the Data General oneday series last month, has also lost his place. In place of Pringle and John Reid, who is unavailable for the rest of the season, the selectors have recalled the opening batsmen, Derek Scott, age 22, and Richard Reid, aged 28. John Reid, aged 30, regarded as an automatic choice for the Auckland Shell Cup and trophy teams, said he was stepping down for personal and family reasons. He was appointed last year as the Auckland Cricket Associations’s director of coaching. The demands of his job and family were such that he could not make a commitment to play for Auckland, he said. Reid, who had earlier announced his unavailability for New Zealand, said he was not retiring from first-class cricket.
