Murder charge after jogger’s death

PA New Plymouth The man accused of attacking a woman jogger faced a charge of her murder when he appeared before Judge Dalmer in the District Court at New Plymouth. A previous charge of attempted murder against Gary Lawrence McKinley, aged 25, an unemployed machine operator, was withdrawn by leave. McKinley was remanded in custody with-

out plea on a charge of the murder of Wendy Ruth Snowdon, aged 23, on November 21. Depositions will be heard on February 26 on that charge and on another of the rape of Ms Snowdon, who died on December 7 after failing to recover consciousness after the attack in New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park. A policeman stood on each side of the dock and three others were present.

On a further charge of cultivating cannabis at Okato between November 1 and November 28, McKinley was remanded to February 26 without plea. Mr John MacDonald for McKinley, said he had not discussed the cannabis charge with his client. No mention was made of the psychiatric assessment for which McKinley was remanded when he first appeared on December 5.
