New senior inspector of schools
Mr Barry Nelson will become the district senior inspector of primary schools in the Education Department’s southern region.
Mr Nelson, aged 51, will succeed Mr Les Cramond, who will retire at the end of this year.
Mr Nelson was educated at Wellington Boys’ College, Victoria University, of Wellington, and Wellington Teachers’ College. After teaching in Wellington for six years, he studied at Auckland University, training in educational psychology. In 1963 Mr Nelson set up the psychological services branch of the Education Department in Timaru. In 1969, Mr Nelson was appointed a senior psychologist with the department in Christchurch, and from 1972 to 1976 was district psychologist for Canterbury and Westland.
Mr Nelson became an inspector of primary schools in 1976. From 1977 to 1982 he was responsible for special education.
He said he thought the future held exciting challenges for those involved in education, and he was looking forward to facing those challenges.
