Whata Beauty to take heading at Otaki

Special correspondent . Wellington The talented Zamazaan mare, Whata Beauty, could break through for her first class 1 success when she tackles the Gressier Stud Handicap at the OtakiMaori Racing Club’s meeting at Otaki today. Whata Beauty has only been lightly tried in the top grade but showed she was up to the class when running third in the Waipukurau Cup and fourth in the Hawke’s Bay Cup last April. She has not been long back from a spell and has shown steady improvement in three starts. Last time out she just failed to beat the promising Exemplify at Waipukurau. That was her first outing over a middle distance this time in and the run should have helped to bring her to peak fitness. She comes into today’s race with just 50.5 kg and, with the services of Maree Lyndon, she should take some heading off. The main opposition could come from the two at the top of the handicap, Chance For Gold and Call Me Stumpy. Chance For Gold failed to flatter in his last start in the Tenderkist Cup at Wanganui, but should find the company here a little weaker. He has been troubled by soreness lately but must still be respected.

Call Me Stumpy’s form is mediocre but he looked close to returning to his best when sixth at Te Aroha on December 6. He subsequently failed in the Avondale Cup but will be better placed here. He won the race last year. Tamworth and Linecall are both promising lower grade graduates which should measure up well. The highly promising Crimesta looks set to extend his fine record this season when he contests the Night Eruption Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The Balmerino four-year-old has recorded four wins from five starts this term and his only defeat was at Wanganui on November 29 when he didn’t have much luck in the running.

He has since atoned with an easy win at Waipukurau on December 5. As a result of his excellent form, he has climbed to a difficult place in the weights but should still have the class to come out on top.

Miss Seymour was an impressive last start winner at Awapuni in only her second start of a fresh campaign. She is a promising mare and should be prominent here while Skybiri looks an improver. Mystic Belle, with a 4.5 kg apprentice allowance, should also be respected.
