Stevens tested
Big fields were attracted in all classes for the Christchurch Kart Club’s race meeting at Carrs Road last Sunday. At times the racing was hectic in the senior 100 cu cm class. No quarter was given between Murray Davies, Shane Drake, Nigel Wilkinson and Damien French. With their 250 cu cm karts, Derek Wilson and Russell Nant made Graham Stevens (125 cu cm Rotax) work for his placings. Bon McWhinnie gave these three a hurry-up in the first two heats, but then had mechanical problems. The consolation class for new drivers went to Graham Corbet His main opponent. Grant Jackson, tangled up with two other karts and rolled over in the third heat. The juniors (aged 12 to 16) turned on some very professional and spirited racing. Bryce Coulbeck, Darren Drake, Nathan Young, Carl Wall, Dean Hyde and Jason Dell mixed it in every race. Hyde made a good start in the handicap feature and was
never headed after hitting the front on the second lap. Dell took second place and there was a great fight between the next three, Drake and Coulbeck dead-heating and Young finishing only millimetres behind them. In the midget class (for those aged six to 12) Myles Spicer showed a clean pair of heels to all the other competitors. In the feature race he was given a handicap of nearly half a lap and just pipped Damien Varnham on the line. Results:— Over four heats.— Midgets.— M. Spicer 1, M. Coulbeck 2, A. Crichton 3.
