Russell found at Wairoa
William John Russell, the escaper from Sunnyside Hospital, will be taken today, from Gisborne to Tokanui Hospital in Waikato for tests. Russell, aged 34, was found at a cousin’s house in the Hawke’s Bay township of Wairoa late on Monday evening. He had .escaped from Sunnyside Hospital five days previously'.
Russell was linked to the disappearance of Kirsa Jensen, aged 14, near Napier more than three years ago. Senior-Sergeant Roger Crawford, of Gisborne, said that Russell was in police custody.
He said that Russell would not be charged and was expected to be taken to Tokanui Hospital, near Te Awamutu, today. The medical superintendent of Sunnyside Hospital, Dr Les Ding, said yesterday that Russell, who was described by the police as dangerous, was a certified patient and had to be returned to a psychiatric hospital. It was important that his state of mind was assessed as soon as practicable. Such tests would probably take a few days, Dr Ding said.
