Oil slick sparks Rhine alert
NZPA-Reuter Wiesbaden West German authorities issued an international alert yesterday after discovering a huge oil slick in the Rhine River, already badly polluted by three recent chemical spills. The Ministry of the Environment in Hesse State said the slick was discovered yesterday morning between the towns of Eltville and Geisenheim, near Mainz. A Ministry spokesman,
Georg Dick, said the oil slick was 13km long and between 10m and 300 m wide, stretching over the entire width of the river at some points. Mr Dick said Hesse authorities had issued an alert to neighbouring countries advising them of the spill. He said authorities were still investigating the cause of the spill but suspected that oil may have been released by a ship.
