Employers confirm hard line

The Employers’ Federation yesterday confirmed the position taken by its delegation this week in rejecting the unions’ proposal to unjam the wage round.
This was that the lead awards should go back into conciliation to be settled at a common level of settlement — either 7 or 7.5 per cent.
The federation is against a central fix — a policy born partly of its opposition to centralised
wage-fixing and partly of disagreement in its own ranks.
Its problem in striking a deal with the unions, philosophical objections aside, is that it cannot get its members to agree on an appropriate level of increase.
While Auckland would probably be prepared to meet the Federation of Labour’s wage claim to avoid further industrial disruption, Wellington and Canterbury are pursuing a particularly hard line and are, at this stage, not prepared to go that high.
