N.Z. pair top bowls table
NZPA staff correspondent Hong Kong The New Zealand pairs team in the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic won its fifth round match 21-14, against the Hong Kong United Services Recreation Club yesterday. The win took Peter Beiliss and Rowan Brassey to four wins from five outings and eight points on the Section B table. • Scotland is in a similar position but the New Zealanders head the table by virtue of their shot difference of 36 (119 for 83 against). Scotland, represented by George Adrain and Willie Wood, has a shot difference of nine (102 for and 93 against). In section A England (represented by Wynne Richards and John Bell) and Hong Kong (represented by Mark McMahon and George Souza jnr.) remained undefeated in the fifth round.
They recorded wins over the United States and the Hong Kong Football Club respectively. After the win over U.S.R.C. Beiliss said that he and Brassey faced two vital qualifying matches, after today’s rest day, against Newcastle District N.S.W. on Friday and Ireland on Saturday. “Those are vital matches.” Beiliss said. Scotland defeated the Newcastle District line-up of Bob Fishlock and Terry McCabe, 19-12, and thereby relegated the Australians to third place. Beiliss said before the tournament began that he and Brassey decided they had to share the matches against the international sides and win the ones against local teams. “We’ve achieved the half-way stage as far as the overseas teams are concerned. We probably need to have another two wins to be sure of qualifying (for the quarter finals on Saturday).”
