Fiat takes over Alfa Romeo
Fiat has secured the future of Alfa Romeo by taking over the Stateowned Italian company. The multi-national, according to Ford, had been invited by the Italian Government to assist.
Ford is disappointed at the outcome of the long and involved negotiations, but it appears that Fiat came up with the better offer.
Fiat has pledged to keep on all the Alfa group’s 32,500 workers and it also bid for the entire group, which includes the aeronautical and turbocharger divisions, whereas Ford was interested in the car division only. Alfa will be brought together with Lancia
under the new regime. Together they will produce about 600,000 cars annually by 1991. Fiat has decided to upgrade Lancia to compete more closely with the Mercedes-Benz, while the Alfa will become a more sporting car to compete with BMW. This new policy appears to be out of kilter. Although Alfa Romeo has a sporting background, it has not been actively concerned with motor sport for a couple of decades, whereas Lancia has not only been involved in world championship rallying with considerable success but has also participated with prominence in sports car endurance racing.
