Wallace poised to take karting
The final round of the southern karting series between Canterbury, Otago and Southland will be held at the Carrs road raceway on Sunday afternoon. The first round was held at Invercargill in September. Four classes have contested the series. Michael Wallace, of Otago, is poised to take the senior 100 cu cm Yamaha class. He will start with a 15-point advantage over the Christchurch driver, Nigel Wilkinson. With a win worth 15 points and 17 karts in the field, positions can swap quickly and Wallace will be unable to relax. Mathew Lamb and Bryce Coulbeck dominated the junior class at Invercargill, Coulbeck coming out on top. These two should be kept honest by Southland’s Stephen Monaghan.
The top drivers will be wary of a new driver, Nathan Young, who competed in the
South Island championships as a relative unknown and finished in the top four in all races. Darryl MacDougall, of Dunedin, took the Christchurch drivers, Lee Ciaughton and Mark Coulbeck. by surprise in the first round of the midget class and came close to achieving maximum points. Jason Richafds (Nelson) will be keen to win in his last meeting in the class. John Hamilton and Damien French in their lightweight 130 cu cm karts are the likely pair for the open class, although Bob McWhinnie (125 cu cm Suzuki) is still improving and Robert Oakley has been going well in his twin 100 cu cm Yamaha kart. At the end of the series racing, a "test” between Can-, terbury, Otago and southland will be raced over three heats with each province being represented by three drivers. Southland has the lead with 85 points, Canterbutry has 81 and Otago has 67.
