'Wetvest’ for pool test
A new form of water fitness exercise will be tested at the Centennial Pool from today to Saturday. The technique uses a “wetvest,” a vest which keeps a person buoyant and upright in the water while exercising. A wetvest display will be held at the pool between 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. from today to Saturday. The City Council is organising the event in conjunction with Commercial Textiles, Ltd, which is producing the vest in New Zealand. The company is a branch of Lane Walker Rudkin Industries, Ltd. The idea of the vest originated in the United States, where it had been popular with paraplegics and the elderly, and among sports people with muscle injuries, said a
recreation officer with the council, Mrs Anne Hindson. Tomorrow, a senior citizen workout and an exercise-to-music session will be held. On Saturday, a “wetvest challenge” will be held between a team of news media and sports people and a group of paraplegics. The wetvest was ideal for people who were not confident in the water, or who could not swim a long distance, said Mrs Hindson. Gentle or strenuous exercise could be done in the vest. However, it should not be used as a lifejacket, said Mrs Hindson. Wetvests would be available for hire or could be bought from the Centennial Pooi or the manufacturer.
