Pilot survives glider crash
The pilot of a glider escaped serious injury when his aircraft crashed at Rangiora yesterday. Mr Kenneth McAlpine suffered a broken ankle in the accident. The Christchurch air accident inspector, Mr David Graham, said the cockpit and front of the single-seater, high-per-formance glider was extensively damaged. He said the glider had
been descending from a low altitude when it crashed about 500 m from Rangiora Airport about midday. Mr Graham said the glider had been making an approach for landing but the pilot might have been seeking another air current to keep him aloft longer. The cause of the crash will be the subject of a report by Mr Graham.
