Competition on Bayer Classic

PA Levin A novel competition will be introduced to the New Zealand race-going public at the Levin Racing Club’s Bayer Classic meeting next Wednesday. On-course patrons will be able to place their names in one of 14 barrels each representing a runner in the field for the day’s feature event, the Bayer Classic. One name will be drawn from each barrel to have a runner representing them in the race and the winner will receive return airline

tickets for two to the Auckland Cup on January 1, plus free accommodation at an Ellerslie motel.

Levin Racing Club secretary, Jim Watters, said the idea for the competition came from the American racing track Santa Anita where it was used as a very successful promotion.

"The club has called it the Santa Anita sweepstake and we believe it will be just one more attraction to encourage people to attend a race meeting,” Watters said.
