Twelve Gauge in line for big prize

Special correspondent Auckland Twelve Gauge, now five, has looked likely to win a big race since a three-year-old, and he is presented with another opportunity at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa tomorrow. From Levin, Twelve Gauge is one of a strong Central Districts team which seems likely to make a big impact on the $lOO,OOO Waikato Times Gold Cup. Besides Twelve Gauge it includes The Filbert and Milldewe, from Hawera, and Beaver Boy, from Stratford, each a good prospect. Threesome, from Matamata, will probably be best backed to keep out the visitors. She is certainly a good stayer when in top form, capable of winning this or any of the big distance races. It was a firm belief of trainer, Wally McEwan, that Twelve Gauge was short of a close-up preliminary race when he last ran, in the Rotorua Cup.

That being the case he did well to run second, behind Del’s Delight. His latest race previously was five weeks before, when he won at Otaki.

Beaver Boy, when third, and Milldewe (fourth), also ran creditably in the big race at Rotorua. Neither had any luck and Twelve Gauge was also ill-served by the running, forced wide through most of the 2200 m.

That did not take anything from the performance of Del’s Delight, which won by a length and a half. Meanwhile, Del’s Delight finished second in the 2400 m Benson and Hedges, at Riccarton, then sixth in the Canterbury Gold Cup, a failure that could be excused, his having to carry the weight-for-age 57kg.

There is not much of Del’s Delight and with 4.5 kg less he could be a different proposition this time.

Barusha and Daria’s Fun hold form that commands respect and The Filbert, fresh from his

latest Australian campaign, adds much to the quality of the field.

Barusha seems unable, these days, to go a poor race. He turned in another good one when second behind Eastern Joy, over -2200 m, at Te Rapa last Saturday, right on top of a 2000 m win at Avondale on November 4. Daria’s Fun ran on stoutly last time, when third in a 2200 m at Ellerslie, on November 8, behind Oak Vue, and won a 1600 m, two starts back, at Te Rapa.

The Filbert has not raced since he finished third in the W. S. Cox Plate, at Moonee Valley, behind Bonecrusher and Waverley Star. It was another of his good, trades-man-like performances, even if he could not threaten the other two.

Run For Cover, a lightweight tomorrow, also last raced in Melbourne, for a third in last Saturday’s Sandown Cup. A six-year-old gelding, trained at Te Rapa, Run For Cover turned in several good races last season on his home track.
