Pixanover deserves success at Alexandra Park tonight

Special correspondent Auckland Pixanover will not have an easy time endeavouring to win the $50,000 Franklin Trotting Cup at Alexandra Park this evening but one thing is for certain — he does deserve to succeed. The presence of Luxury Liner, Placid Victor and Comedy Lad — the best pacers in the north — could see Pixanover start at good odds in the BASFsponsored Cup, which will be run over 3200 m from a standing start. Trained at Drury by Peter Wolfenden, with regular driver, Glen Wolfenden, Pixanover continued a frustrating sequence of placed performances last Saturday. Often, with a little luck in the running, Pixanover may have emerged the winner but good fortune has not been on his side. Pixanover will start from the inside of the

10m mark and, after a fine effort, when second to Metal Mickey at Alexandra Park last Saturday, should be handy to the pace soon after the start. Placid Victor failed to fire on his southern trip after looking back to his best in his last three northern performances. He was a disappointing eighth in the New Zealand Cup, after having every show, and a useful fifth in the Benson and Hedges Free-For-All last Friday. Placid Victor looked bright in training at Pukekohe on Thursday and looked to have taken no harm from the trip. He is such a good stayer he must be respected. Luxury Liner put on an uncharacteristic display in the Free-For-All at Addington last Friday, breaking when in front with 1400 m to go and finishing second-to-last.

His previous effort for second to the brilliant Master Mood in the New

Zealand Cup was a game one and it would not be wise to drop him after just one bad performance. Comedy Lad, as usual, could win if he is saved for a last run. at the leaders and his ability to begin well from a standing start should see him handily placed at the outset Smooth Jack looks certain to start favourite in the third leg of the T.A.B. treble, the BASF Video Mobile Mile. He won more easily than the margin of a neck suggests, when beating Star of Shanghai last Saturday, and from the handy No. 3 barrier draw will be hard to beat. Clarius has not had much luck in his recent racing and he is sure to make his presence felt, while the veteran, Cinimod Junior, which won over a mile in 1:59 at Alexandra Park recently, seems certain to give a lot of cheek from No. 1.
