Two men sought after chase
Two men are still sought by the Christchurch police after a chase in Malrehau early yesterday morning In which two constables were allegedly attacked with an axe. The police were following positive lines of inquiry in the search for the two men, said Detective Sergeant John EH. The pair were believed to be involved in at least one of two pharmacy burglaries reported to the police yesterday. One man was arrested after he was bailed up by a police dog, Benson. He appeared in the District Court yesterday afternoon on two charges of assault and two of burglary.
The police said that the Mairehau Pharmacy, in Hills Road, was. broken into about 4.4# a.m. Soon afterwards a member of the public reported hearing breaking glass at A. B. Munro, Ltd, a pharmacy in Warrington Street, St Albans. Uniformed police arrived and gave chase to a man who ran through
properties in Manuka Street and Greenwood Street, Mairebau. Two incidents resulted. Constable Greg Clapp SS, by a man with an axe. Constable Lloyd suffered bruising, but Constable Clapp and Benson had no apparent injury. A man was caught by other police soon afterwards. He was charged with two counts of assault and two of burglary.
