Speaking Japanese
Sir, — Last night I attended the Japanese speech contest in Christchurch. I was absolutely spellbound by the two girls who won the contest. I remember over the years the number of letters you have published from employers who consistently stated that New Zealanders were not good enough to serve Japanese tourists. One letter I remember in particular insisted
that New Zealanders who have not lived for years in Japan could not hope to be able to work with Japanese tourists. I wonder if there is anyone out there still who, after hearing the skill with which the two girls from the Christchurch Polytechnic spoke, could still have the nerve to prefer to employ Japanese imports in our tourist industry. I also wonder why there was no entrant from the University of Canterbury? — Yours, etc.,
