Sale of fireworks

Sir, —I read with interest your report (November 18) on a Christchurch husband and wife who want to ban personal sales of fireworks, and to have public displays only on Guy Fawkes night. I feel it is more the responsibility of parents to ensure their children do not do anything unsafe with fireworks. More to the point, however, it appears as if the principal offenders this year were students from Dunedin, partaking in some ludicrous “war” using fireworks. It seems nobody can control our country’s young academics. I say continue selling fireworks to lawabiding, safety-conscious citizens and if our so-called academics do not fall into this category, then ban sales to them. — Yours, etc.,

DAVID THOMPSON. November 18, 1986.
