Combined effort wanted
New Zealand tourist industry leaders and their Australian counterparts are to discuss joint marketing in South American and other areas. r The idea of promoting the South-West Pacific, rather than individual destinations, was first suggested by Australian Tourist Industry Association (ATIA) president Sir Frank Moore at the New Zealand Tourist Industry Federation annual conference in Wellington. “And we’re picking up the gauntlet,” says the federation’s president, Mr Duncan Hamilton. *<We can see great merit in New Zealand, and Australia combining their marketing efforts in certain areas.” : So he and the federation chief executive, Mr Tony Staniford, will this week talk to Sir Frank and other officials about a united onslaught in South America, and later, in other parts of the world too. Mr Hamilton will also tell the association’s annual conference that Australia and New Zealand can together attract many of the 1000 million people living in the northern hemisphere. “Few travel to our corner of the world without taking in both countries and probably other Pacific nations too. We complement each other: palm trees, coral reefs, deserts, snow-capped mountains, rainforests and glaciers. Mr Hamilton says many South Americans had the ability to holiday in Australia and New Zealand. But it is best to present them with as attractive a package as possible. “We’ll be telling the Australians this. But whether they will see it our way or not remains to be seen.”
