Earl(y) bird gets villains
“BUSTED UP” Starring Irene Cara, Paul Coufos, Tony Rosato, Frank Pellegrino. Directed by Conrad E. Palmisno. CBS-Fox. 91min. M. Earl Bird is a “round ring” (barefist) boxer and something of a neighbourhood hero. . He has been a battler all his life in the rough, tough and seedy city backstreets where pugilistic tenacity is a prerequi-
site for survival. Hoodlums out to make a fast buck are threatening his world and that of his friends, but these “worms” of the underworld did not reckon on the resolve and resilience of this Earl(y) Bird. They are systematically squeezing the local tenants out of their homes and businesses, until Bird lays his life on the line to stop them. The hero, whose driving
motivation until now has been to provide for his young daughter, the only tender spot in his life, proceeds to soak up .enough punishment to flatten a battleship. He comes smiling through, unbelievably at times, bruised and bloodied, but without even a hint of a fat lip. The best that can be said for “Busted Up” is that it is rough — all round.
