Matai St to keep name
Matai Street East will not undergo another name change. Earlier this year, the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mrs Margaret Austin, suggested the street’s name be changed to Helen Connon Street or Avenue. Miss Connan was the. first woman to receive a master of' arts degree from what was then Canterbury University College, and was the principal of Christchurch Girl’s High School from 1883 to 1894. The new Girls’ High School is on Matai Street. The council’s works and services committee asked residents of the street for their views on a possible name change. All but one resident opposed ttie change. Last evening the committee decided to keep the present name.
