Consultants recommend no change to corner

A consultants’ report has recommended that no changes be made to the corner of Deans Avenue and Moorhouse Avenue. Earlier this year members of the Riccarton Borough Council’s works and services committee said the corner was dangerous, as traffic had to slow down too quickly to negotiate it. Last evening the council received a report from the Traffic Design Group, of Lower Hutt. The report suggested two possible

ways of improving the corner.

The first option would widen 10m the outside of the corner into what is now the Wrightson NMA building. This option would cost about $400,000, and would mean traffic could travel round the corner up to skm/h.

The second option would mean cutting into Hagley Park 10m. It would cost $200,000, and would improve the possible speed up to seven kilometres an hour. It

would mean some trees in the park would have to be felled. The report concluded that the road should remain as it is. “Any useful alternative would be expensive in terms of the effects on Hagley Park or adjoining properties with only a limited practical gain in driver comfort,” it said.

The committee received the report, and no further action will be taken.
