Arthritis research funds ‘needed’
More money is needed to fund research into the cause and a cure of arthritis, according to the Arthritis Foundation’s new president, Mr David Morgan. “Our ambition is to achieve a major breakthrough,” he said. The foundation was collaborating closely with research in other countries. It had increased its research fund this year to $500,000, but more support was needed for specific programmes. The foundation was looking for sponsors to augment the funds already provided by public appeal, donations, and bequests. Arthritis and rheumatism afflicted up to a million New Zealanders
of all ages. The foundation ran welfare and education programmes, but saw research as the critical means of providing longterm solutions.
