Lord Reims, Goess in form for Avondale

Special correspondent Auckland Neither able to get a start at Rotorua last Saturday, Lord Reims and Guess promise to make strong bids in the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting today. For the two horses success is specially important because both need a bit of weight to make certain of places in such rich events coming close, as the Waikato Times Cup and the Lion Red Avondale Cup. Lord Reims and Guess were given 50kg for the Rotorua Cup and under the higher scale for today’s race they both have 53kg, a fair handicap, their latest form taken into account. Guess won both of his last two races — middledistance highweights at Matamata and Tauranga — and Lord Reims, in just two starts since he re-

turned to racing after a winter spell, has managed a second placing then a first, in a class two 2000 metres at Ellerslie on October 24. Next to Lord Reims and Guess the best prospects for the Norfolk Island Handicap seem to be Threesome, Barusha and Call Me Kiwi. At the peak of form she reached last autumn Threesome could be guaranteed to be in the finish, even though the 2000 metres is, perhaps, short of her best distance. But there must be some doubt of her complete readiness because she has had only one race this season. Threesome will be interesting, though. A good showing, somewhere in the placings, would encourage hopes for her chance of a big handicap this summer. If Lord Reims or Guess is successful a double for Takanini stables, with Solveig and Patricia in the

second leg, the Dewar Scotch Whisky Handicap, would become very much a prospect. Such a fine mare the past couple of seasons, now five years old, Solveig returned to racing impressively after her winter let-up to win an 1100 metres at Ellerslie on October 4. She was outpaced meantime, before finishing fifth over 1200 at Pukekohe but the run seemed to do her no harm. Patricia, since starting afresh this season, has had just one race but that might have been all she needed. She has been back in training for quite a while, looking as good as ever. Patricia won three races as a four-year-old last season and turned in several other very worthwhile performances, one when second to Mishare at Ellerslie, another as runner-up to Cool Deal at Te Awamutu.
