The VAXmate, Digital Equipment Corporation’s personal computer, which combines MS-DOS capability with access to Digital VAX information, software, and services. The VAXmate is both IBM PC/AT compatible and is integrated into the
VAX product range. It is the first personal computer designed specifically for networking, with built-in Thinwire Ethernnet. Basic hardware includes a one-piece combined system unit and monitor, a keyboard and
mouse, RS 432 port and high-speed Thin Wire Ethernet connections.
The system central processor unit is based on the Intel 80286 chip running at 8 MHz. An expansion box is available containing a 20-Mb, half-height hard
disk, and hard disk controller, plus two option slots for IBM or thirdparty cards. The expansion box slides in under the systems unit. The one megabyte of RAM (memory) can be computed to three megabytes.
