Wine coolers

Sir, —Congratulations to Maurice Hunter for his timely remarks on “coolers" in his Grapevine column (October 28). He points out that wine coolers are aimed at the young and trendy 18 to 24-year-old market as they are rather sweet with “no discernible alcohol taste.” This implies that people who will now drink coolers are people who would have previously consumed non-alcoholic drinks or perhaps low alcohol beer. This, as Maurice Hunter says, “constitutes a trap.” Wine coolers contain from 4 to 6 per cent alcohol whereas beer contains from 1 to 5 per cent alcohol, with low alcohol beer around, the 1 to 2 per cent mark. So many young inexperienced drinkers are now going to be surrounded by advertisements pushing wine coolers as the trendy, healthy drink — a drink without any taste of alcohol but which is more potent than the strongest type of beer. — Yours, etc.,

VIVIEN DALEY, DIANE SHANNON, Towards Ending Alcohol Misuse. October 30, 1986.
