Casual sex

Sir, — Ted Hicks (October 27) is right in attacking casual sex. The “revolt of youth” movement in the 1960 s and 1970 s had great ideals, but the sexual revolution part has been disastrous. Promiscuity and permissiveness have led to a vastly increased incidence of almost epidemic proportions of cervical cancer, and sexually transmitted diseases such as A.1.D.5., chlamydia, herpes and its many variations, and a host of others, all leading to infertility. Add to this nearplague the lax sexual climate which has encouraged sexual deviation (we have seen some horrible results lately), rape and so on. Other consequences include family break-ups, leading to a host of lonely, solo parents, most of whose children are disadvantaged medically, legally, educationally and socially; the bill for permissiveness is mighty high. Morality only represents religious authority in that the latter reflects natural laws based on age-long evolutionary experience, so a rejection of morality carries dire risks. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON.
