Lamb killing to Fernside

Two Fernside farmers were first and second in both classes of the Colin Mclntosh memorial lambkilling competition held at the NCF Kaiapoi, Ltd, works on Tuesday.

Sam Smith and D. N. Evans were first and second in the under-16kg and the unrestricted carcase weight classes. The on-the-hooks works judging was a follow-up to an on-the-hoof judging at the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association Rangiora show on the Saturday, when the same competitors had wins and places in some of the classes there.

A gift lamb killing competition, with the proceeds to go to the association, was won by G. Donald, of Balcairn, with K. Barwell,

of Loburn, second, and K. D. Stevenson and the Stevenson brothers, all of Flaxton, sharing third.

Entries were well down on last year, but taking into account this year’s severe winter, these were considered to be of a reasonable standard.

Only 12 pens of three lambs were offered in the Colin Mcintosh competition and eight lambs for the gift competition. The judging was done by the works supervising grader, Mr Graeme Wyllie.
