Truly national company

Nearly 100,000 New Zealanders — some three per cent of the population — now own a part of Brierley Investments, Ltd, but the latest annual report shows that no one owns a commanding stake in it.

BlL’s largest shareholder is the AMP Society with just 5.38 per cent. The chairman, Mr Ron

Brierley, comes in second with 4.69 per cent, and NZI Life is third with 2.33 per cent. No other shareholder has more than 2 per cent, and all told there were 95,059 BIL shareholders registered at the balance date on June 30. Given that life insurance offices make up the bulk of the leading share-

holders, and that they represent the savings of many people, it is likely a good many more New Zealanders have at least an indirect interest in BIL shares. An interesting investor is Auckland-based export house Amalgamated Dairies which is the seventhlargest BIL shareholder

with 6.3 million shares, or 0.84 per cent. All told 35,435 of the company’s shareholders hold stakes of 500 shares or fewer. At the other end of the scale, 123 have more than 500,000 shares.

Mr Brierley’s personal holding of 34.8 million BIL shares is worth about $245 million (ex-issue).
