PA Auckland The former Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Eden electorate.
Mr Tauroa, aged 59, beat three other contenders last evening to right the Auckland seat against Labour’s Mr Richard Northey. '
It is believed Mr Tauroa’a first ballot margin in a secret vote was emphatic. Delegates greeted his victory by throwing streamers over him. Mr Tauroa, a former teacher and leading rugby coach, sang a Waiata to celebrate his win. Other contenders were Messrs Jock Parbhu, David Phillip, and Mr Trevor Rogers. Mr Northey holds Eden with a majority of 2306 votes.
