Light Foyle wins in track record time

Special correspondent Dunedin Light Foyle provided a highlight of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday when he came from the tail of the field to win over 2000 metres (mobile) in the track record time of 2:30.2.

Light Foyle had started from the second line and he was second last for much of the way in a 13horse field.

A five-year-old by the Australian pacer, Bay Foyle, which won the 1971 New Zealand Free-For-All, Light Foyle is the second foal from Judy Light, by Local Light. He is raced by his Temuka breeder, Mrs E. T. Mulligan, and trained by Dick Prendergast at Chertsey. The previous track record for 2000 metres (mobile) was 2:30.8 set by Maureen’s Dream on the second day of the Labour week-end meeting last year.

Frangelico easily won the main event by half a head after the coolest of drives by Richard Brosnan.

He sat quietly as Frangelico came from several lengths off the lead at the 300 metres and ran down the pace-maker, Patchy

Robins, of Oamaru, is a half-brother to Robin’s Star, which took a record of 1:59.4. He is the first winner for Mr Yee, but Mr Lee has won with the five previous horses he has raced, Spangled Hanover, Butler Hanover, Spangle’s Gold, Chance Fortune and Kenton. Lad.

Spangled Hanover, bought at the National Yearling Sales, was his first venture and won a CO race at Oamaru in May, 1969.

Mr Lee raced her in partnership with the Kakanui horseman, Jim Dalgety, and she won three races.

The same partnership bred and raced two of the progeny of Spangled Hanover — Spangle’s Gold, and Butler Hanover, both by Jack Chance. Spangles Gold won six of his 10 starts in the 1976-77 season. Butler Hanover won four of his seven starts. Both went to the United States and won there. Mr Lee then sold his share in Spangled Hanover to Dalgety’s son, Jim.

Spangled Hanover has subsequently left Farm Boss (two N.Z. wins) and Castle Hide, a recent winner.
