Honours to college crew

The St Andrew’s College crew, with its coach, John Cook, in the boat took the handicap honours in the annual New Brighton-to-Kerrs Reach eights rowing race yesterday.

Sixteen crews took part in the event, raced in ideal conditions. Canterbury University, making a rare appearance, was first across the line and the Avon premiers recorded the fastest time, covering the 7.5 kilometres in 16min 20.445. It was an incident-free race, though crews had to avoid an obstacle — a weed cutter — before travelling under the Burwood Bridge.

After the event the Avon Club’s captain, Don Symon, announced that Avon would be boating a women’s junior four this season.

Meanwhile the first regatta of the season was held on the Kaiapoi River on Saturday, the Union club narrowly taking the honours with 34 points to the 31 scored by the host club, Cure. Next came Avon 17, Canterbury 16 and Akaroa 9.

The Canterbury combination of Simon Aitchison and Montrose Gilbert was afterwards presented with the F.D. Kesteven Cup for junior doubles, last won in 1962. The last winners of the trophy were Neil Smith and John Hunter, another Canterbury club crew. Hunter was a member of the Munich Olympic gold-medal-winning eight. The trophy was returned by the Akaroa club, which had it in its possession for some time. New . Brighton eights
