Zephyr leader wins again

The experienced Zephyr class skipper, Bill Beere (Christchurch Yacht Club), continued his recent good form when he was a convincing winner in the third race of the South Island Zephyr championships being sailed on the Estuary yesterday.

Beere, who is leading over-all in the five race series, started off strongly and by the Ebb mark held an 8s lead over Ken Maynard skippering Runaway, and Don Le Page in Nutcracker a further 8s back. Beere, at the helm of his yacht Echo, increased his lead out to 23s over Maynard on the wingmark, and on the final beat to the finish went further ahead to win by 39s from Maynard with Le Page a further 6s back in third place.

In the third race for the Peter Mander trophy, the Christchurch Boys’ High School yacht Snoopy, skippered by Bill Hancock with Richard Cookson as crew, dominated the event to win by 2min 36s from Kimihia I, skippered by Dion Vincent and Bevan Stevens as crew, from Linwood High School.

In the third race of the 470 s Neville England, and Sarah Tregear, sailing Blood Vessel, were convincing winners over Gary England and Tom Histon as crew in the yacht No Name.

Mark Howell continued his dominance in the Starling class winning his three races to hold an unassailable lead in the five-race series.
