Airline dispute for court?

PA Auckland A long-running dispute between Air New Zealand stewardesses, who want equal promotional rights, and male stewards may be resolved in the Arbitration Court. The two sides have failed to come to any agreement after the Human Rights Commission became involved more than two years ago. They met yesterday before an industrial conciliator to see whether the case should be referred to the Arbitration Court. The row centres on the right of stewardesses to

be promoted to chief purser status — a move the male members of the union have opposed. Women were granted the same promotional rights in 1975 under the Equal Opportunities Act but those employed before 1975 were excluded. An Air New Zealand spokesman, Mr John Freer, said the company was “sympathetic to the case being put forward by female cabin crew members.”

Spokespersons for the Air New Zealand Stewards and Hostesses’ Union were unavailable for comment yesterday.
