Suharto to stand again
NZPA-Reuter Jakarta President Suharto, aged 65, who has ruled Indonesia for 20 years, yesterday said he would accept a fifth Presidential term that would keep him in power until 1993. The Golkar party pre-
sented Mr Suharto with a petition urging him to stand again after his term expires in March, 1988. Accepting the nomination to cheers of “Long live Suharto” in a crowded convention centre, he asked for “only
one thing.” “If mid-way through the five-year period people think I am not capable of carrying out the task, they should immediately • stop me. They have the Constitutional right to do this,” he said.
