AUSTRALIA Markets rise again

NZPA-AAP Sydney A stronger gold sector and selective buying among quality industrials pushed national share markets back into record breaking territory. Trading opened cautiously firm following an almost SUSS rise in bullion overnight, but demand improved in late trading as a flurry of buying orders propelled most gold-related stocks to their day’s highs. Brokers also reported strong support for food, insurance and media stocks on optimism fuelled by a stronger currency. On the mining boards, Kidston and Emperor added 30c each to 800 and 600, Renison rose 10 to 820 and Metana improved 14 to 580. Gold Mines of Kalgoolie eased 10 to 1500. MIM rose 24 to 268 and CRA added 6 to 810. BHP slipped 2 to 858 and Bell Resources lost 10 to 415 while Peko-Wallsend closed 2 higher at 686, after touching 680. Higher world crude prices saw local onshore producers close generally firmer with Santos up 10 to 440 on solid turnover and 5c gains taking Ampol Exploration to 280 and AOG to 220 while Vamgas fell 5 to 275. Interest also focused on Howard Smith, Ltd, with Sydney broker Rivkin placing 3.13-milKon 'Shatvs. The stock closed unchanged at 500. F. H. FatHffibg was among the top 'performers on the industrials boards rising 66 to 590 and Arnotts, which announced it was selling part of its stake in Goodman Fielder, added 10 to 510. Goodman rose 12 to 375. News Corp advanced 80c on overseas demand to a record 3600 and Fairfax was also keenly sought, closing 30 up at 690. FAI climbed 26 to 706, Lend Lease firmed 30 to 1010 and lEL closed 28 higher at 628.
