The New Zealand Army’s fleet of ambulances will be replaced early next year with 19 of these new Mercedes Benz ambulances. Five of the new ambulances, costing about $70,000 each, will be allocated to 3 Medical Battalion, based at Burnham. Designed in West Germany, and mounted on chassis identical to the Army’s new Unimog trucks, the air-conditioned ambulances can carry up to nine patients. The glass-fibre ambulances will be built in Auckland to German specifications; the first time the company has authorised manufacture outside West Germany.
