Call to arms

Sir, —Although very flattering, Ted Hicks’ contrast of Connie Summers’ World War II pacifist views with those of a group of female “Blimps” (October 17) is entirely distorted. A real comparison would have been less flattering. Those who assert that they will not bear arms to resist aggression only invite aggression. Those who are pacifists today are alive and able to preach the doctrine because from 1939 to 1945 there were sufficient people who were not pacifists. The force of arms shut down the crematoria; but that is of no relevance to the pacifist. It often appears that it is the unsullied purity of his or her conscience that is of paramount importance to the pacifist. — Yours, etc., DAVID SHANKS. October 20, 1986.
