Nine new national reserves are being investigated by the National Parks and Reserves Authority.
The “candidates” for the status were chosen after the authority developed criteria to identify national reserves for their
natural heritage, scenic, recreational and histori-cal-archaeological qualities, while falling short of national • park status.
The nine are Waimanu geyser area near Rotorua, Pegasus area of Stewart Island, the sub-Antarctic islands, The Remarkables near Queenstown, the Lewis Pass area, Hauraki
Gulf and Rangitoto Island, Lake Taupo, the Kawarau and Shotover rivers, and Te Paki at the northern tip of Northland.
No reserves based on historical and archaeological qualities have been identified yet. Candidates are being discussed with the Historic Places Trust.
