Man, boy found dead in car

PA Auckland A West Auckland schoolboy found dead in a car on Friday had been in Social Welfare care because of an emotional problem. He was John Peter Barnett, aged 14. Also in the car was the body of Alan Gavin Wayne Derry, aged 35, of Henderson. The car was parked at

Huia, on the northern shore of Manukau Harbour.

The police believe the pair died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a hose vented into the car.

Derery and Barnett had been friends, the police said. The Social Welfare residential institution’s director, Mr Geoff Comber, said Barnett’s foster parents were distraught over his death. He said Barnett did not come home from school and was found in the car about 10.30 p.m. on Friday.

He had just gone into temporary foster care while he and his parents resolved a family problem.

The police found Mr Derry’s will in the car.
