Hockey gains new coach
The coach of the New Zealand women’s hockey team until December, 1988, will be a former national captain, Mrs Pat Barwick, of Christchurch.
She will also occupy a place on the national selection panel, along with Miss Ann Booth, of Wairarapa, and Mrs Paddy Jenkins, of Otago. These selections were made by the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association’s council from a panel of nominations, by a majority decision.
Mr Wayne Boyd’s term of appointment. as national coach was completed at the end of the recent World Cup contest in Amsterdam; Mrs Barwick was the assistant coach of that team.
Her goal is to prepare a team over the next two years for possible inclusion in the Seoul Olympics.
The N.Z.W.H.A. has learned that Korea is interested in visiting New Zealand next month and Ireland has similar aspirations for 1987. An invitation to New Zealand to compete in a qualifying tournament in June next year has been received from the Netherlands, so plenty of top line competition is in the offing.
