Cup win worth more than stakes for three meetings

By

J. J. BOYLE

In about 2J6 minutes the Christchurch-owned Mr Lomondy earned more in winning the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, than could have been won in total stakes for the 29 events at the Wellington, Canterbury J.C. and Counties meetings that day. A total of $398,000 was distributed in stakes at Riccarton, Trentham, and Pukekohe.

Mr Lomondy’s winning share of the Caulfield Cup stake was the equivalent of $417,500 — exclusive of the $2OOO trophy. On his first campaign in Australia in May Mr Lomondy triumphed in the Adelaide Cup, a race worth SAustl 10,000 to the winner.

The Caulfield Cup winner was bred in Central Otago by Messrs Alister and Jack McArthur and was passed in at $24,000 at the National Sales at Trentham in 1982.

He became the first of the Noble Bijou’s to win at

3200 metres when he triumphed in the Adelaide Cup. His dam Loma Lass (by Lomdon) won nine races up to 2000 m including the James Hazlett Stakes, and her half-sister Tui’s Lass won eight including the New Zealand St Leger. Mr Lomdon races in the interests of Mr and Mrs J. Lawrence, Phillip Kerr, and Harry Kain. Mr Kain is a member of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The result with New Zealand T.A.B. dividends is: CAULFIELD CUP $502,000; 2400 m. 7-8 MR LOMONDY 6 53.5 D. Walsh 1 6-6 AT TALAQ 3 54.5 M. ClarVp 2 12-12 OUR SOPHIA 4 ’54.5 G.
