Teaching vacancies
Sir,—l do not share the Education Department’s . "surprise” at the non-hiring of British teachers to fill New Zealand vacancies (October 16). The shortage of teachers is a wellpublicised myth. I wrote to the department asking for figures on present and past teacher shortages in March of this year. I was astonished to be told that out of 13,380 employed teachers there were vacancies for 192 on February 1, 1986. Hardly a figure to justify a 32 per cent salary increase or $280,000 spent advertising in Britain as 800 graduate each year from Teachers’ College. I am still waiting for the figures on past shortages so I can compare them with the present. — Yours, etc.,
JEANETTE FORBES. October 17, 1986.
