Cooling Beehive atmosphere
Trevor Sutcliffe, an engineering plant operator, monitors the amount of energy used in an air conditioning unit in the Beehive, Wellington.
The big chiller is linked to the heating system which winds throughout the building. Heat flows and electricity use are monitored in the Beehive as part of the Government Build-
ings Energy Management programme. The programme is run by engineers from the Ministry of Works. Two kilometres of
cable, running from datagathering sensors in the building, feed information which controls 70 different energy consuming items.
The monitoring programme has been in use since last December and is expected to run for a full 12 months to gather information on all the seasons.
According to last, year’s figures, the building’s total energy requirements for one year cost $470,000 and heating made up $70,500.
