Murder Inc aim for U.S.

By

TONY GREEN

You would have to be keeping a pretty low profile to have missed a Murder Inc gig recently — the band seem to be cropping up everywhere from a brief residency at the Marine to a long series of support slots for touring bands.

It seems that all the work is paying off with a steady increase in crowd numbers acknowledging the band’s raucous appeal.

Mark Brooks the bassist and lead vocalist with Murder Inc., sees the next

few months as important ones, especially with the release, in three weeks, of a five-track, self-financed EP. “We’ve got a more professional attitude now I suppose. We’re filming a live three-song video to use to try and get a record deal, possibly with either Slash or Big Time in America.” The band will promote the self-titled EP with another tour north, including playing the “Showdown In Cuba Street” with the Johnnys and the Texas

Rangers. 3 In keeping with their businesslike approach, a shift overseas has also been planned tentatively for April, inevitably to America, but with the possibility of staying for sometime in Britain. Ambitious stuff for four part-time musicians, but Brooks, who rates Murder Inc. as “the best band I’ve been in” (he played also in the Vauxhalls, The Newtones, and The White Boys), is convinced the band is dedicated enough to make a real impres-

sion. • Murder Inc. headline at the Gladstone on Saturday. . . • Tomorrow evening is the last appearance of The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience before their tour north. The video of “Flex,” a song from their current EP, will be shown. The band will be doing more recording while in Auckland next month. The support band tomorrow will be Sun Zoom Speed. • Tonight Smacc Riflemin and guests play.
