Conner tries to enlist anti-KZ7 aid

of NZPA Fremantle Dennis Conner’s Stars And Stripes syndicate is pushing for a meeting of all challengers to force some action over New Zealand's fibreglass boat. It released a letter yesterday outlining its opposition to the New Zealand boat, repeating its claim of last Friday that it is humanly impossible for a surveyor to ensure that a glass fibre boat is built to specifications. It has called on the other syndicates to force the challenge organisers, Yacht Club Costa Smerelda, to call a meeting of challengers to discuss the issue. In its letter, the syndicate says: “We are now halfway through the preliminary series. “As time goes by it becomes increasingly unfair to both the New Zealanders and the other challengers if our request remains open and KZ7 subject to future protest. "Beyond the specific issue of the legality of KZ7 lie questions as to the future health of the 12metre class. “If glass construction is permitted which, in fact, achieves a favourable longitudinal or vertical weight distribution in the completed boat, existing alloy 12s are immediately rendered obsolete and substantially devalued. “Lloyd’s is taking the position that KZ7 should not be subject to meaning-
ful resurvey (including suitable core sampling) because her plans were approved and a Lloyd’s inspector was on hand during the construction period. "Our point, simply stated, is that no human being op behalf of Lloyd’s, watching the construction process with his own eyes, has the capability to determine if the finished weight of the hull meets the approved standards. “Therefore, a much more precise measurement procedure should be required for fibreglass construction, including post construction assay of the actual hull weight. “Not checking out KZ7 very carefully for this series may well send a signal to future builders of glass 12s that if they can slip something past Lloyd’s they are home free with no danger of ever getting caught. “In fact we should be sending just the opposite signal.” Race report, back page
