Child care vital, says study

Many women would not be able to study, at Christchurch Polytechnic if child care was not available, according to a recently released study. The study, made by the Vocational Training Council, examined the situations of 34 women students who used the childcare facility between

1981 and 1984. Twentyseven of the women said the availability of child care influenced their decision to study at the Polytechnic. Fifteen said they would not have been able to complete their course without the unit. Most of the women said their courses had been

vocationally worth while. Others said their “hobby” courses had given them the confidence needed when applying for jobs. The report concluded that the women’s responses “must raise questions about unmet training needs where such facilities do not exist.”
