Wrecked boat to be sold
The Howard L. Shadbolt, which is wrecked on Stonyhurst beach north of Motunau, will be put up for sale by tender. Mr Tony Runacres, an insurance broker for the vessel’s owner, Independent Fisheries, Ltd, said that she would be offered for sale “as is where is.” The vessel was badly damaged and was showing signs of breaking up, he said. Negotiations were still being held with the Howard L. Shadbolt’s insurer, the National Insurance Company, over the claim for her loss. While the claim was following procedures set by precedent, the death
of the vessel’s skipper last Thursday meant that a master’s report on the grounding would not be available. Mr Christopher McCarthy and his brother, Patrick, were killed when a Lama helicopter crashed on to the deck during attempts to salvage the vessel. The lack of the report had complicated the claim slightly although it was going “quite well,” said Mr Runacres. The wreck is stuck fast on a big rock or the engine of the helicopter and attempts to haul her free failed throughout last week. The final attempt was made on Friday.
