Sexy jeans cut to really fit your shape

The denim revival has been given a raunchy high profile with the introduction to New Zealand of one of the world’s fastest growing casualwear labels. Guess? launched its shape-conscious styles on the local market with television, magazine, and newspaper advertising promoting a provocative, sexually-aware image. It is all in keeping with the philosophy of the company’s president and designer, Georges Marciano. He says that a woman’s bottom is sexy and shapes jeans to show it off. His Latin machismo and cutting skills have

proved winning characteristics. Since emigrating to the United States in 1981 Marciano has become a multi-millionaire. His clothes, now including men’s and children’s ranges, are made under licence throughout the world, and backed up by suggestive advertising. Pumperdinck fashions, of Auckland, gained the manufacturing rights for Guess? summer styles in time to recut the American patterns for the heavier thighs of New Zealanders.

The Guess? range is now on the shelves of many shops, including, in Christchurch, Quinns of

Merivale, and in the Shades Shopping Precinct, Euro Trends, which is one of only two Georges Marciano franchise stores in New Zealand. The other is in Hamilton. The businessman behind Euro Trends, Graham Moffat, sought the franchise because he could see the local potential for the Guess? look. Its range of jeans, tailored for differing shapes, gave most customers the chance to get a bodyconscious fit. Basic styles include a tight tapered pant for the slim, a medium straight cut designed to fit flat across the small of the

back, and a pleated, but still shapely, style for those with wider hips. Although Guess? allows licensees to adapt patterns for their market the changes can only be slight. “If you bought Guess? in the United States or in New Zealand the over-all pattern is the same,” says Graham Moffat. Heavyweight denim must be used, and seasonal styling variations followed. The worn-look of bleached and stonewashed denim is now favoured, and in some styles it is carried further with ready-frayed cuffs and pockets. .
